Malaria is a disease that is highly endemic in sub-Saharan Africa especially in Nigeria. As a major challenge to human development, it has big consequences for families and communities. In addition, management of malaria in settings with poor resources is complex because of cases of mis-diagnosis, lack of trained health professionals and lack of accessible diagnostic tools. This year’s theme for World Malaria Day is Ending Malaria for good which embodies the vision of a malaria-free world where the global burden is lowered over the next 15 years.
In line with this theme, the introduction of Rapid Tests Diagnostics (RDTs) has made testing, treatment and prevention of malaria a simpler task not only for communities but for health workers as well. RDTs are a low cost and simple to operate tool that makes malaria testing easier to access for those that dwell in resource-poor settings. This tool which uses body fluids that can be collected non-invasively is more preferred as it requires minimal training.
