Welcome to the PharmAccess Tanzania office

A thriving office in Dar es Salaam, leading solutions and services to strengthen the healthcare market in Tanzania

About us

Our mission is to make better healthcare accessible and affordable to all Tanzanians. The Tanzania office does this through in-country initiatives aims at supporting demand-side financing of healthcare (health insurance), improving quality of healthcare services (SafeCare), access to loans for healthcare providers (Medical Credit Fund), and integration of digital technology to ensure increased efficiency and transparency. Our office believes that the only way to make healthcare markets work in the country is through addressing both sides of supply and demand for healthcare.

In Tanzania, the improved CHF (iCHF) scheme which we designed and piloted at two regions of Kilimanjaro and Manyara provided a blueprint for a national community health insurance scheme (iCHF) which has been rolled out throughout 26 regions of the country by the government. We are currently working with the Zanzibar government to design a Health Financing Strategy to ensure sustainable healthcare financing for UHC in the Islands. Through Medical Credit Fund (MCF) we succeeded to facilitate disbursement of loans worth 2 million USD to over 100 private health facilities for improving quality of services and there is a total of 800 healthcare facilities which has been assessed and are using SafeCare standards to measure and improve clinical quality and organization management. Our MomCare program has supported over 9,700 expectant mothers throughout their pregnancy journey in the Manyara region. By combining a care bundle, closed wallet, and the quality improvement method SafeCare under one umbrella mothers are empowered to access the care they can trust and assured of safe delivery.

Our ambition is to support the government’s goal to ensure the country achieves UHC by 2030. We believe this can be achieved by forging partnerships with government and private organizations (including umbrella associations) while putting digital technology at the center of our implementation.

From our office, we offer leading solutions and services to strengthen the healthcare market in Tanzania including:

Lessons learned from rolling out the iCHF health insurance scheme

The last decade, PharmAccess helped designing and rolling out health insurance reforms in the country, including iCHF, that focused on people working in the informal sector.

The model became a blueprint for developing the National iCHF (N-iCHF), which is to be implemented in all 26 regions of Tanzania.

The brochure lists our approach and some of our learnings acquired during implementing iCHF in  Manyara and Kilimanjaro, that can help accelerate the road to universal health coverage (UHC) in Tanzania and other sub-Saharan African countries.

PharmAccess supports The Ministry of Health of the Government of Zanzibar to roll out universal healthcare (UHC) in Zanzibar

PharmAccess has been in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Zanzibar since 2020. Through this collaboration, PharmAccess has been implementing various interventions to support the Ministry in establishing sustainable universal health coverage (UHC) and therefore improve access to quality health care for Zanzibaris. We have been working closely with the Ministry to support the documentation of their health financing strategy and the establishment of mandatory health insurance and the Health Equity Fund.

As part of our collaboration, we have also been providing technical support to enable the provision of a unique identifier (Kadi ya Matibabu) for the Zanzibaris. This will increase transparency in healthcare utilization and ensure that all citizens have access to quality care.

Our technical support to the Ministry on the digital quality improvement mechanisms in all Public and private health facilities aims to ensure improvement in standards and quality of healthcare service delivery. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, we have also introduced community NCD remote care monitoring to increase access to quality care for non-communicable disease patients.

This collaboration is a significant milestone in our efforts to improve access to health care for all, and we are committed to continuing our work with the Ministry of Health Zanzibar to ensure that everyone has access to the care they need.
